Q: Have you been artistically gifted your entire life?
A: I believe so. I have always been creative, artistic, and was told I was gifted since I was a little girl.
Q: When and/or how did you decide on the look/style of your pieces?
A: When I first plunged into creating art on a regular basis as a form of catharsis I was unaware of any style or look that I wanted to portray into my work. The work was never thought-out; I just created as a means of survival though a very hard time in my life. It was a refuge, and I was alone with my artistic work, alone with myself, and alone with my emotions while trying to work some things out in my life. I just created, felt and never thought of the outcome. Later when much of the hard time passed, I fell in love with the process of my creations and how they helped me heal and I started to see many of the things I was always fond of coming out in my art. Some examples are: WWII propaganda, Victorian and Edwardian Eras, the 1900’s –-1950’s, Pin Ups, Nature, Medical Advances and Research, Political and Religious Studies, Celebrating the Dead, and so on.
Q: Walk us through the art making process?
A: Oftentimes I go with a solid idea that has popped into my head (exp: while reading a book), other times I will sketch random ideas on paper trying to work out what I want to say and work from that point of reference. I keep a sketchbook with me at all times for random inspiration in odd places. Although I don’t have a consistent process each time I work, the constant in my studio is food and music. I am always eating something.
Q: How long is the process from start to finish?
A: This all really depends on the work itself. Some take me a lot less time than expected, and others take way more time that I would expect. I really never know the length of time of the process since I am so OCD at times, and have a hard time letting things go, and calling them finished.
Q: Where do you draw inspiration from?
A: So much of my inspiration comes from my inner feelings about my life or the world around me. Music and reading books and other forms of periodicals are wonderfully inspirational. I read around 5 books at a time, and often time in the middle of a page I get an idea and have to stop and start working out the idea in my head or on paper.
Q: Do you do custom work per a customers request?
A: Yes, I am open for commission work when I have time. I do artwork commissions, but I also do website and graphic design work as well.
Q: Any memorable or odd requests?
A: Yes, I was one asked to do a private commission that I can’t openly talk about. Also, on a very regular basis people will email me or talk to me about their ideas and what they want me to do with my art which I find really odd.
Q: Is anyone notable or famous a fan of your work that you know of?
A: Yeah, but I don’t like to name drop. I am excited that he owns my work, one of these days he can tell you about it.
Q: What is the ultimate goal that you hope to achieve through your work?
A: In my work the achievement is to better my life and learn about myself and the world around me though creativity, if it helps other people along the way then I am double thankful for the outcome.
Q: Do you have any new projects coming up?
A: I have a bunch of things on the horizon! Over the last 4 years I have created 78 original pieces of art for the “Silver Era Tarot” deck that will be published in Spring 2010 by Schiffer Publishing, along with the full companion book by author Russell J. Moon. Obvious Remote Chaos, my poetry, lyrics and short storybook that is illustrated with my photography is currently at the publisher being laid out for a late 2009 or early 2010 release as well. I am also knee deep into the preparation of the Lowbrow Tarot Project. The project will showcase 23 amazing artists who will use their creative genius and unique style to take on a tarot deck, tabletop book and exhibition, which will be released at the events opening on October 9, 2010 at Billy Shire Fine Arts. We also have a website with more information and an artist list at www.lowbrowtarot.com. I am also working on 3 other books that I can’t share yet, an oracle deck, and another full 78-card tarot deck and the plethora of other things as well.
